KITTIES

To my little girl

Sabine,
You’ve been in the hospital the past three days, fighting for your life. I can’t believe how different it feels not having you here…shadowing me…pawing at me…meowing at me. No matter where I went, you always followed…you were always there.

I’m racked with guilt thinking that I could have taken you in sooner, that it could have made a difference, that you might have had a better prognosis if I had. I keep thinking that if I didn’t leave you alone the past weekend, I would have seen all the signs. Most of all, I feel guilty that I spent so much time away from you–traveling, working, doing things that didn’t matter or weren’t important, knowing you’d always be waiting for me when I returned home.

I hate thinking of you alone and scared in the hospital. All I want to do is bring you home and hold you, and make you feel better. I’m sick to my stomach knowing that all I can do is hope for the best. Hoping and waiting never seems like it’s enough.

I can’t imagine losing you, Sabine. It seems unfair in so many ways. I can’t imagine not having you around. It seems unbearable. I keep thinking that you’ll get better and we’ll go on with our lives, and have more time together.

CABINS VIRGINIA

Shenandoah River State Park

To commemorate the one-year anniversary since we were engaged, Sly and I rented a cabin at Shenendoah River State Park for the weekend before Valentine’s day (we were engaged February 13 at Big Basin near Santa Cruz, CA, in a cabin). One year later, and so much has changed…for one, we’re married! And another, we live on the opposite coast now. One thing hasn’t changed, and that’s our love of the outdoors. We’ll definitely be back to these amazing cabins, and to further explore the Shenandoah area

KITTIES

Walter

There are a few friendly neighborhood kitties that like paying our kitties a visit from time to time. My favorite is named “Walter” — He (at least I think he’s a he) is a huge orange tabby with an extremely furrowed brow. Walter is quite possibly the frumpiest looking cat I have ever seen, but also one of the sweetest I have ever met.

Editor’s note 8/22/12: we haven’t seen walter in quite some time. Our neighbor believes he has passed away. 🙁 Goodbye Walter, you will be missed.

Editor’s note 2/2/13: on our last day at our old house, after not seeing him for over a year, Walter came by to say goodbye! He walked right into our house as we were moving/cleaning and acted as if he owned the place! We were pretty happy to see him again and know that he was ok.

CALIFORNIA PHOTOGRAPHY + FILM

Christine + Andre | Laguna Beach, CA

Christine and Andre were married last November at historic Crystal Cove State Park in a very intimate ceremony, held under white tents right beside the beach. The weather forecast predicted a storm and high winds throughout their entire outdoor wedding! As luck would have it, after the couple said their vows, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds and made for beautiful skies, and a very memorable wedding. Following the reception, the couple held a small after-party at a nearby resort. Guests had fun taking photos using a DIY photobooth rigged up by the bride. Congratulations, Christine and Andre!

MEMENTOS

Vows

slyveronika273

Since getting married, several people have asked us to post our vows. Here they are!

Sly to Veronika

My dearest Veronika,
Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted two things in life: a log cabin in the middle of nowhere, and a girl who would have no problem jumping in a ring with me to spar. Even better, a log cabin with  a ring inside of it for the girl and I to spar in. Amazingly enough, the first thing we really connected on was the log cabin. Soon after that, I found out that you were the type of person who would not only spar with me, but actually beat me up and win every fight, both literally and figuratively, then take the log cabin for yourself. What are the odds of finding someone like you? Chalk it up to luck or fate — either way, I am the luckiest guy in the world to have you, and the happiest. A dream that I’ve had my entire life I’ve found in you. Continue Reading

CAMPERVAN NEW ZEALAND OUTDOORS

New Zealand | Lake Tekapo to Te Anau

I take what I said back about the holiday park we pulled into late last night. It’s still definitely more rustic than a Top 10 chain holiday park, but omg, look at the view.We had no idea the lake was THIS close when we drove in darkness to our campsite last night. It was supposed to rain today, I was expecting to wake up to another cold morning of drizzling rain, which, honestly, given the miraculous weather recovery on our wedding day, resulting in perfect weather, I could care less about the weather at this point. I’ve used up all my weather karma, and I’ll take what I can get.

Weather gods must be smiling on us though. I woke up just in time to catch the sunrise over Lake Tekapo. It was unintentional that I was up so early, but instead of going back to bed, I decided to grab the camera and take a walk along the lake shore and watch the sun rise. Not a soul could be found in sight, which surprised me. It left just me, the fighting ducks, the bluest of blue waters, and my thoughts; a meditative moment that one reads or writes about, but is never able to accurately describe that exact moment of solitude.

CAMPERVAN NEW ZEALAND OUTDOORS

New Zealand | Kaikoura to Lake Tekapo

We woke up to the sound of roaring thunder, making us want to stay put in our cozy campervan as long as possible. Needless to say, we got a late start in the morning, allowing ourselves time to sleep in the morning. This meant we got up at 6:45 am instead of 2am, tooled around, ate breakfast in the campervan, and then headed across the street to a seafood place that sold crayfish. It was closed (and no signs on the door indicating when it would open), so we drove along the wharf to the seal colony.IMG_2343 Continue Reading
