MEMENTOS NYC

The pictures that we don’t take

The morning after #nyc #newyorkcity #newyorknewyork #hubby
the morning after

I wish I had photos of our dimly-lit 6 course dinner,  in particular the beet and hazelnut dish.
I wish I had a video of the kid playing drums on plastic containers in the subway and all the random people dancing to his beats.
I wish I had a picture of the touchy-feely doorman at the first bar we went to who broke up a bar fight and was totally in love with Janet.
I wish I had a photo of the front of the bar across the street that we called “Hogs n Hefers” even though it was named something else,  the bar we almost went in out of desperation to get out of the cold.
I wish I had pictures of my friend’s wife huddling in the corner,  of us running through the streets,  of the doorman (a different one) who told us we had to leave, of the two guys at the bar who we tried to get Janet to talk to all night ( mostly out of curiosity)
I wish I had photos of our table(s) — littered with every kind of glass and bottle imaginable — and also a plate of fruit.
I wish I had a photo of our cabbie with the softest, most mechanical other worldy alien voice ever and me in the back seat yelling at the tv screen trying to answer jeopardy questions and only getting the one about Metallica correct.

I wish I had a picture of all of us, strangers and friends that we haven’t seen for ages before the night begun, and then BFFs by the time the night was over at 4:30am, giving each other long hugs and making all kinds of promises to see each other soon.

Another night of memories, the kind that only seem to happen in a city like New York,  the kind that you are too busy living instead of photographing.  The kind of night whose pictures will live on forever,  if only in your own mind.

NYC

A Weekend Getaway

Window view #windowporn #nyc #newyork #manhattan #skyline #citylife

Hello from NYC!

We hopped on a bus and took a somewhat last-minute trip to the city early this morning for a little getaway.  Rooms were crazy cheap (for NYC) and we love New York when it’s colder and when there are significantly less tourists.

Our plans this weekend pretty much involve eating ramen, shopping at uniqlo and meeting up with friends.  Most likely we won’t stray too far from our hotel which is situated on one of the best food streets in nyc: russ & daughters,  il laboratorio, katz’s deli… and then just a few blocks away, even more faves: oh taisho, otafuku,  japadog… yup we got a pretty big weekend ahead of us.

Ramen count: 1 spicy pork with egg from Totto Ramen
Coffee count: 1 small cup from Amy’s Bread
Dinner tonight: Contra,  right around the corner from our hotel (srsly the prefect location)
Bonus points: our tiny hotel room has a pretty awesome view.

Sunday

Lazy Sunday #catsofinstagram #Sunday #lazysunday #catsareamansbestfriend

We were up early for an 8am Bikram class (more on that later). Then back home, quick showers, and off to meet up with friends for soup dumplings. After a week of gray skies (literally and figuratively), single digit temperature (hello polar vortex), and freezing rain, today felt like a gift. Warmish and sunny. Like maybe we had seen the last of Winter. Continue Reading

Saturday

lazy Saturday

Saturday. After waiting for you all week. After enduring a miserable Friday. Finally you were here. And even if it rained and rained and rained that was okay because we had hot,  homemade coffee,  Denver omelets,  cuddly kitties,  and hours curled up reading on my old ratty,  cat fur-covered chair. Saturday,  you are going by too fast and I am trying not to think about what lies on the other side of Saturday…Sunday… which means Sunday night… which means that sick feeling that I have not yet been able to shake since my days in Architecture school (that would be the “Oh-crap-it’s-Sunday-night-and-I-have-to-go-to-the-studio-to-finish-up-a-project-while-all-my-friends-are-doing-fun-college-y-things-feeling”). Ugh. Continue Reading
