BEACHES HAWAII

Honolulu | Beach Life

I spent pretty much every day in Waikiki the same way: woke up early to eat heaping plates of tropical fruit at our complimentary breakfast buffet with Sly, watched the sunrise from the balcony, completed the daily crossword puzzle(s), walked across the street to the beach, read a book, took a nap on the warm sand, returned from beach to hang out on balcony while listening to the evening’s entertainment playing poolside below, and dinner with Sly after he returned from work.

Some days there were slight variations that involved acai bowls, bus rides to non-touristy parts of town, shopping at Target (Target! I missed you) and browsing the sale section at the Urban Outfitters located across the street from our hotel. Every day, a different, yet similar beach, a new book. I contemplated taking surfing lessons but, after watching a pre-teen girl, her stage mom, and said girl’s own personal videographer “take surf lessons,” I thought, forget it. This beach will do just fine.

Tough life, I know, but someone has to live it…

Truthfully, it always feels weird to be on vacation (for me anyway) and do absolutely nothing. Most of our vacations seem jam-packed with activities and hikes and early mornings/little sleep and barely catching flights/trains/cabs. It’s rare for me to lie on the beach all day because I get way too hot and even more antsy.

I had no complaints this time around -blue skies, sandy beaches, warm aqua blue water, gently swaying palm trees, top notch people watching (like really, so good), a free cookie given to me for some reason by a guy at the coffee hut across the street, and most of all an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and contentedness. I mean, hello, I was in frickin’ Hawaii!

Doing nothing in Hawaii was pretty fantastic.

Sockmonkey Life’s a Beach Photobooth. Put it on wheels. Haul it to the beach at sunrise. Take it home at sunset. Million dollar idea.

I’m not sure I like the “hauling” part of this plan.

Feeling more relaxed already! I loved spending days like this in Waikiki while Larry was working, too. During your next trip, take a ukulele lesson! Also, our friends took surfing lessons (on the leeward side?) a few months ago and had a great time.

I definitely want to take surfing lessons I just don’t want it to be a huge production or with a big group. Now I’m curious about other lessons available/unique to Hawaii.
