MEMENTOS

Silver Shoes

mom

My mom and dad were married by a judge in a very small and simple ceremony. She wore a (VERY) short mini dress with sparkly silver shoes. I was obsessed with those shoes as a kid. They were like shoes Cinderella would wear! I would often sneak into my mom’s closet and played dress up for hours wearing those little silver shoes. I wasn’t pretending to be a princess or a fairy or a bride or whatever it was little girls in those days aspired to be. I wanted to be my mom — beautiful and graceful, yes, but also tenacious and giving and kind and goofy and curious and brave and pretty much all the qualities you could ever want to be.

Not to mention stylish enough to wear a mini skirt and silver heels to her wedding.

At our wedding, I wore silver shoes too.

Just like Mom.

Well, maybe some day.

Weekday Playlist

Max is not amused

It’s a warm and sunny early evening. Pre-dinner. We have changed into our loungewear/pjs already and are laying about like slugs on the couch, in the warm sun, like our kitties. Sly gets up to make salad dressing for a salad we never end up eating. I impersonate Cher, singing “Do You Believe In Love” in the worst way possible. Sly is not amused. I find the song on Spotify and play it — over and over and over — and then find another Cher song and another.

Soon we are listening to all kinds of songs, prefacing each with, “remember this one?” and “how about this?” or “I got one!” Our playlist spans songs by Counting Crows, Radiohead, 311, Jane’s Addiction, NIN, Blur, Breeders, STP, Third Eye Blind, No Doubt, and countless other 90s bands. Eventually we end up on Sugar Ray which always brings laughs — along with the sad realization that we can pretty much sing along to every single song. Needless to say I won’t be DJing any parties any time soon.

We pop open some Somersby apple cider and dance with the kitties. We may or may not look like this.

The kitties are not amused. But we certainly are.

We woke up early (though I guess we always get up early), made breakfast and drove to Costco. We were threw caution to the wind and broke the cardinal rule of going to Costco: never go on a weekend. We didn’t care. We were wild and crazy. We arrived not even an hour after opening and already all the lots were nearly full. Undeterred, we pressed on. Continue Reading
