HOME KOREA

NOTES | This Past Weekend

at home in korea

I know I spend a lot of time documenting various trips or weekend excursions but I have found that the posts I most enjoy looking back on are of the normal, everyday things that we did. This weekend was one of the first full weekends this year where we were both at home together for both days. No annoying Sunday drives to the train station to drop/pick up Sly. Just a quiet weekend of doing nothing but relaxing, eating a ton of home-cooked meals, and hanging out with the kitties. My favorite kind of weekend.

these may be the best things Sly has ever baked!

Things we did:

  • baked flourless peanut butter cookies
  • cleaned out and reorganized our fridge
  • sampled everything we could get our grubby mitts on at the Korean grocery store. I love the Korean grocery store (I want to eat everything!), though this one is more like a Super Target — it sells food, clothes, home goods, electronics, weird gilded statues of rhinestone encrusted elephants, you know, just like Target! At the bakery, I tried a sample of soft, sweet bread filled with cream cheese and crab? I think? Whatever it was tasted so delicious.
  • gorged on pre-made Korean food and sides bought at the grocery store for lunch, then ate fruit because we were ‘too full’ for dinner. Around midnight, Sly randomly asked if I felt like eating some homemade scones. Was that a question that ever needed to be asked? DUH. So Sly (and Rufus) whipped up a batch of homemade blueberry scones which we ate while we binge-watched The Killing on Netflix
  • watched (just me) the 2016 US National ladies’ figure skating finals on YouTube. I miss the Michelle Kwan days and I especially miss watching figure skating with my sister
  • became obsessed with two games on my phone: Neko Atsume and Blossom Blast Saga. Anyone else playing these games on their phone?
  • stuffed ourselves with Sly’s homemade chicken wings, aka what I pretty much request to eat every single weekend
  • read a book on hiking the PCT that made me really think about planning a backpacking trip in the spring
  • skyped Sly’s parents and said hello to our other kitty, Pandora who is still loving life being spoiled rotten by her loving grandparents.
  • cozied up on our couch with the kitties (and a scone or two) as our first real thunderstorm (with lightning!) tore through the mountains near our apartment and rattled our windows with its gusts of wind and pelting rain.
  • bought tickets to Japan!

Your photography is so damn amazing. I might need a warning when going from sweet kitty picture to jumbo prawns. Yay for homemade scones, tickets to Japan, cats, and so many other things. I spent my weekend doodling houses, not eating, finally eating cadbury mini-eggs, realizing I can’t just eat cadbury mini-eggs and feel normal, getting lettuce wraps and egg rolls from pf changs, feeling much better, and FINALLY seeing my son – we did art projects and played with his new doll house/look out center for his paw patrol doggies. I took some pictures, but not enough. Are the above pics from a phone or do you bring a camera with you around town? I used to have a tiny Nikon coolpix JUST for that reason, but then I got a phone 3 months later, and didn’t need the camera. And of course now I can’t find it’s charger!

Thanks, Karen! I’m using my year-old camera phone which was a big upgrade from my previous 5 yr old camera. I don’t really carry my slr around unless I travel somewhere (and even then sometimes I’m so reluctant). I love my slr but sometimes it’s such a hassle. I might start carrying around my gopro. It’s so tiny and nobody suspect anything when I’m taking photos incognito.

Funny you mentioned the kitty to prawns transition! Haha! I forgot to add some text under the photo in my rush to hit publish.

What an awesome weekend! And since you have a fridge full of wings (or did you consume them all already?), I feel compelled to share two of our favorite recipes that I no longer eat. What are veggie friends for?

SPICY APRICOT WINGS: These are the best thing ever. http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/spicy-apricot-wings

KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN: This is the recipe that converted me from someone who didn’t eat meat off the bone into a vicious carnivore ripping flesh off the bone with my teeth. Perhaps there’s no need to make Korean chicken when you live in Korea and can get it anywhere, but this recipe is amazing. http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Korean-Fried-Chicken-Recipe

Now I want chicken! Maybe I’ll have to get some chick’n from the store and dip it in the sauces. 🙁

Also, I love that the fridge is so full that the top shelf is bowing! And the kitty on the stool is adorable. We have kitchen helpers, too, but they can reach the counter without standing on anything…

Sadly those wings are long gone. 😢. But I’ll pass those recipes along to the wing chef of the house. Thanks! Mmmmmmm…wings…

I know! What isn’t really visible are all the bottles of booze in the back weighing down the shelf!

The kitties can actually reach the counter if they stand on their tippy toes. Usually they just swat stuff though. Rufus, on the other hand, is soooo interested in anything made/prepped on that counter. He usually sits patiently on the stool for a treat whenever we are cooking.

Ha! I love that you have a secret booze stash! What drink goes well with wings???

We usually drink makgeolli because we like it with everything but I believe the “correct” pairing in Korea is beer — Cass, Hiite, OB or some local craft beer that is only now becoming popular. I suppose it depends on the sauce and if you’re going spicy or sweet? Damn now I want wings again.

Fridge interiors…the promise of good things to come.
Now let me get this straight, you had de scone on de sofa and you ate ’em bot’ up?
Is Pandora less growly with Sly’s parents?

Pandora loves her Grandparents! She only seems to growl when Grandma tries to hold her but is fine when Granpa carries her everywhere like a princess. Spoiled.
