cabin in the woods

This past Sunday, we took a day trip to the Shenandoah area (specifically near a town called Edinburg) to have a late lunch at our friends’ rented weekend cabin. The cabin itself was what one would call “interesting” and had “lots of character.” In other words, a hodgepodge assortment of collected items including fishing trophies, framed Elton John lyrics, creepy stuffed dolls (two of which could be seen from outside ‘hugging’ in the loft window), random baby paintings and an assorted menagerie of all things loosely considered “country.” Out back, behind the cabin and with a burned wood sign that read, “no reservations needed” was an outdoor shower facing the woods, which in turn faced the main street. Like I said, interesting with lots of character but awesome in its own right.

After lengthy discussions on how we would redecorate the cabin, we all sat down around the coffee table and grilled up some meat and made Korean-style lettuce wraps. Of course we ate ourselves to the point of lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling, because that’s just what we do.

Love this! We made a similar trip over the long weekend – to a cabin in Lost River, WV. I love how quirky rental cabins are – not my personal decorating style, but so fun to stay in as guest!

I love seeing how people interpret “rustic” and “country.” When we lived in Cali, all the cabins we rented were decorated with bear paraphernelia, out here it’s a lot of fishing and hunting. I should have taken more detail shots of all the weird stuff hanging on the walls…next time.
